PORTIMÃO · PORTUGAL
Sea caves, gold cliffs, the Atlantic in the morning.
Boat tours, kayak runs, sunset cruises and day trips along the western Algarve. Benagil and the cave coast first; the marina towns and the Monchique hills after.
Only on this coast
Three reasons people fly to Portimão.
Sea-cave cathedrals, gold sandstone cliffs and an Atlantic sunset from a deck. Benagil gets the postcards. The other two are what makes the days in between worth it.
Sea cave country
Inside Benagil.
A sandstone cathedral with a perfect circle cut into the roof and a beach inside. The light hits the sand in the morning, the water glows turquoise after lunch. Reachable only from the water — no road, no walking trail. Almost everyone who comes to the Algarve goes in.

The cliff coast
The Algarve's gold coastline.
Twenty kilometres of sandstone cliffs between Lagos and Albufeira, rusted gold above turquoise. Stacks, arches, sea caves big enough to drive a boat into. The whole coast looks engineered — it isn't, it's just what wind and Atlantic do to soft rock over a few million years.

On the Atlantic
Sunset from the water.
Portugal's south coast faces south — meaning the sun drops over the Atlantic from a boat deck rather than over a horizon of buildings. Most of the marina's evening fleet is out an hour before sundown and back as the lights of Praia da Rocha come on. The cheapest world-class sunset on the continent.

The Benagil question
How do you want to do the cave?
Almost every traveller in Portimão is choosing between the same three modes — standard boat for the easy run, kayak if you actually want to set foot on the sand inside, speedboat if you’re here for the ride. Top-reviewed option for each.
Start with the cave
The boat trip every traveller books.
Almost everyone arriving in Portimão comes for one specific thing: the eye-shaped opening in the roof of Benagil. This is the run that gets them inside it.
The Algarve regulars
Portimão's Most Popular Tours
Cave runs, kayak routes into Benagil, dolphin loops and the longer Algarve coast cruises. The tours travellers book within a day of landing.
By town
Pick a base on the Algarve.
Portimão for the marina and the cave departures. Carvoeiro for the white-cliff cove. Alvor for the lagoon. Armação de Pêra and Albufeira for the resort beaches. Silves inland for the castle day.
By tour type
Or pick how you want to spend the day.
Speedboat if you want range. Catamaran if you want a deck and a swim ladder. Kayak if you want to go inside the cave itself. Plus dolphin loops, jeep safaris into the Monchique hills, and a tandem skydive over the cliffs.
Get inside the cave
Three ways to kayak in.
The boat tour shows you Benagil from outside. The kayak tour puts you on the sand inside it — the only legal way to actually land in the cave. Three guides we’d book first.
Out past the cliffs
Boats that go looking for dolphins.
Common dolphins year-round, bottlenose in summer, occasional sperm whales further out. The Atlantic off Portimão is one of the better stretches of coast for sightings — three skippers who keep finding them.
Slow it down
A deck, a swim ladder, half a day.
Catamarans are the way to make the cave coast last longer than a quick run. Open deck, a stop for a swim off the back, sometimes a BBQ. Pick one if you’d rather a half day than a sprint.
When the marina’s enough
Up into the Algarve interior.
Cork forests, Moorish hill towns, wine estates and the road over the Monchique mountains. The days you remember from outside the boat — pick one if you’ve already done the cave run.
